Using Partnerships, Hua Medicine Brings Novel Diabetes Drug to Phase III

Six years ago, Hua Medicine (Shanghai) in-licensed global rights to a novel GKA treatment for type 2 diabetes from Roche. Late last year, Hua announced positive results from the candidate's China proof-of-concept Phase II trial. The company also raised $50 million in additional capital during 2016 and has started US clinical development of the GKA candidate. Li Chen, PhD, co-founded Hua with Ge Li, PhD, founder of WuXi AppTec. WuXi AppTec considers partnerships a part of its overall product development capability, Dr. Hua Mu, SVP at WuXi told ChinaBio® Today in an exclusive interview. WuXi forms partnerships to advance product development for the partners and gain faster approval of the products in development for China, he said. The ChinaBio® Partnering Forum, which will be held May 18-19 in Suzhou has been important to WuXi and Dr. Mu. Jiangsu Hengrui Medicine Uses Partnerships to Advance Novel Drug Programs

In September 2015, Jiangsu Hengrui Medicine made history by out-licensing global rights (not including China) to its PD-1 cancer immunotherapy. Incyte, a US oncology pharma, acquired the rights in a deal worth up to $795 million if Hengrui collects all the milestones, the largest amount ever paid for a single China pharma asset. The deal underscores the tremendous progress the China biopharma industry, and Hengrui in particular, has made in transforming into a global developer of novel drugs. Lianshan Zhang, PhD, President of Global R&D at Hengrui and a bona fide sea turtle or hai gui, told ChinaBio® Today in an exclusive interview that Incyte is a very good fit for Hengrui's PD-1 molecule. Ascletis Approved for Taiwan Trial of Interferon-Free HCV Regimen

Ascletis Pharma, a Hangzhou clinical stage biopharma, has been approved to begin a Phase II trial in Taiwan of its dual-drug, interferon-free treatment for chronic hepatitis C. The regimen consists of two Ascletis direct-acting antivirals (DAAs) that will be administered for 12 weeks. "We expect the dual drug regimen will be comparable to Gilead's Harvoni in efficacy and safety," Dr. Jinzi Wu, Founder, Chairman and CEO of Ascletis, told ChinaBio® Today in an exclusive interview. "But because we are a China company, our regimen will be more affordable." More details....
